You don't need a full table for a great game night. Whether it's a cosy evening in with your partner or a grudge match with a mate, the best two-player games deliver deep strategy, clever bluffing and plenty of laughs in a box that fits on a coffee table.
We've picked ten favourites, from 15-minute fillers to an all-evening epic. Each one comes with its player count, playing time and age rating, so you can find the right fit for your duo.
Quick and easy
Patchwork
2 players · 15–30 minutes · ages 8+
The perfect first two-player game. You each race to stitch together the best quilt from oddly shaped fabric scraps, spending buttons to buy patches and fitting them onto your board like a cosy game of Tetris. It's quick to learn, beautifully produced and surprisingly tactical, because every patch you take changes what your partner can grab next.
Jaipur
2 players · around 30 minutes · ages 10+
A fast, breezy card game set in a bustling Indian market. You trade spices, silks and gems, and sell at just the right moment before the price drops. Take too greedily and you hand your opponent a bargain; wait too long and they'll beat you to the sale. There's always a reason to play “just one more”, so it's ideal for a lunchtime match or a relaxed evening.
Toy Battle

2 players · 15 minutes · ages 8+ · £19.99 at MPGames
New from Paolo Mori, and one of the best-rated two-player games of the past year. You deploy toy soldiers across the battlefield, fighting for control of key zones in a tense tug-of-war. Every placement matters, and a sudden-death finish keeps both of you on edge until the last move. Multiple maps keep it fresh, and at 15 minutes it begs for a best-of-three.
Leaders

2 players · 15 minutes · ages 10+ · £20 at MPGames
A sharp little tactics game on a hex grid. You draft a team of characters, each with their own special ability, then manoeuvre them to outwit your opponent. Do you take the character you want, or the one your opponent is eyeing up? It feels like a game of chess with superpowers, finished before the kettle's cold. Want more? The Vermillion Emperor expansion adds new characters for £11.
A step up
7 Wonders Duel
2 players · around 30 minutes · ages 10+
The two-player spin-off of the classic 7 Wonders, and for many people it's better than the original. You draft cards to build an ancient civilisation, and you can win by out-scoring, out-fighting or out-researching your opponent. Three routes to victory means you're always watching what the other person is up to. If you already own it, the Agora (£17) and Pantheon (£18) expansions add fresh ways to win.
Splendor Duel

2 players · around 30 minutes · ages 10+ · £19.50 at MPGames
A head-to-head version of the much-loved gem-trading game, rebuilt from scratch for two. Grab gems, buy cards and race to one of three winning targets, while keeping an eye on what your opponent needs. It's the natural next step after Jaipur. Add The Counterfeiters expansion (£10) once you've mastered the base game.
Azul Duel

2 players · around 45 minutes · ages 10+ · £21.50 at MPGames
Azul is one of the best-loved family games of the last decade, and this version is built from the ground up for two. You still draft beautiful tiles and fit them into your wall, but now every tile you take is one your partner can't have. It looks gorgeous on the table and makes a lovely gift for any couple who enjoyed the original.
Play on the same side
Codenames: Duet
2 players · around 15 minutes · ages 11+
A cooperative twist on the hit word game. Instead of competing, you and your partner work together to find all the hidden agents in a grid of words, giving each other one-word clues. You each see different information, so you'll learn a lot about how the other person thinks. Great for couples who enjoy a shared challenge, and there's a campaign map to work through together.
Sky Team
2 players · around 15 minutes a landing · ages 12+
You're pilot and co-pilot landing a passenger plane, and you're not allowed to talk about your dice. You'll need to read each other's moves to keep the plane level, slow down in time and get the landing gear down. It won the Spiel des Jahres in 2024 and it's the most tense quarter of an hour you'll spend at a table. Different airports raise the difficulty as you improve.
Deep and absorbing
Twilight Struggle
2 players · 2–3 hours · ages 13+
For those wanting something meatier, this Cold War epic is widely regarded as one of the finest two-player games ever made. One of you plays the USA, the other the USSR, and you battle for influence across the globe from 1945 to 1989. Every card is a real historical event, and the agony is that your best cards often help your opponent too. Expect a hefty playtime and a steep first game, but the tension and the pay-off are immense. Save it for a long winter evening.
